In June 2002, we took Alan’s late mother, Nellie, on a trip she had been meaning to take for many years - on the ferry from Aberdeen to Shetland - the most northerly inhabited isles of Britain. While the rest of the country suffered appalling weather over the weekend, we basked in glorious 24 hour sunshine, as it was the time of year when the sun never really sets. It turned out to be Nellie’s last big trip away, as her health deteriorated over the summer.
